Chemical peels in Northern Virginia are a safe and effective way to repair winter damage, address other dermatological concerns, and achieve a brighter, smoother, and clearer complexion.

Continue reading to learn about the different types of peels and which one may be right for you.

What Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are a non-invasive treatment designed to promote cellular renewal and improve the overall tone and texture of the skin.

During a chemical peel, an acid-based solution is applied to the skin for a specific amount of time, and then removed or neutralized. In the following days, weeks, and months, damaged skin cells are purged and replaced with new healthy cells.

Different Types of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are available in a number of depths and substances to best-address specific needs and goals.

Light Peel

Light chemical peels are usually composed of an alpha hydroxy acid (glycolic acid) or a beta hydroxy acid (salicylic acid) and target the outer layers of skin. This type of peel is ideal for smoothing fine lines and treating blemishes and requires little to no downtime.

Medium Peel

Medium chemical peels are able to penetrate deeper and repair the epidermis and upper dermis. Using trichloroacetic acid, these peels diminish wrinkles, minimize acne scars, and reduce hyperpigmentation. Patients can expect some recovery, and healing takes place over several weeks.

Deep Peel

Deep peels are able to act on the epidermis and deep dermis via phenol acid (carbolic acid). This option is well-suited for individuals that are bothered by deeper wrinkles and lines, severe acne scarring, and sun damage.

These peels are especially effective in stimulating the growth of new collagen to increase elasticity and firmness, but require more downtime than light and medium peels. Results are revealed over the course of several months.

How Many Chemical Peel Treatments Are Recommended?

Lighter peels typically require a series of treatments, followed by maintenance sessions.

However, medium and deeper peels can achieve more dramatic and long-lasting results in one-to-two applications.
